Sharp Semiconductor Innovation Corporation(SSIC) is joining NICT *1 B5G *2 Fund Project “Research and Development of B5G IoT SoC *3 and IoT solution Building Platform of Continuous Evolution” *4 with multiple companies and universities , represented by Sharp Corporation. We are establishing IoT SoC design technology that can be used in various application because it can accommodate future specification changes in the B5G era. Additionally, we are going ahead with the initiative that to take back semiconductor design technology that will be the next-generation key devices in Japan. If the above is realized and the SDR *5 platform is completed, there are two main feature. The first is the ability to implement IoT solutions earlier. Unlike conventional eMBB use cases for smartphones, the solution can be built to suit IoT use cases for any device. The second is the ability to change specifications according to each use case. Functions can be optimized in a scalable manner for each application, such as expanding Sub6GHz for smart factories and mmWave for video transmission.
In this project, we are working on research and development of microcontroller based*6 SoC, hardware security enhancement for platform SoC, custom security implementation, and continuously evolving architectures using software defined radio.

*1 The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology.
*2 Beyond 5G.
*3 System on Chip. A semiconductor that implements all the functions necessary for the operation of a system in a single chip.
*4 This research and development is promoted through research commissioned (JPJ012368C00801) by NICT.
*5 Software Defined Radio. A multi-mode wireless system that can be modified or updated through software changes rather than requiring physical hardware alterations.
*6 An architecture that delegates certain complex tasks to a central controller, allowing for centralized management of multiple access points.
